beef consomme / beef broth

how does one make beef consomme or beef broth? Like say I have a recipe that calls for it how would I make it (besides with a bouillon cube)?

I have made my own chicken broth but never beef. I would use Swanson's beef broth rather than boullion. I think that it would involve a long simmer of a beef roast w/onions, carrotts, celery, and seaonings, than a lot of skimming of the fat. I would go for the Swanson's.

I use Walmart label beef broth.
